5/20/2023 0 Comments Aya of yop city![]() ![]() The Ivory Coast, in the 1970’s, was on an economic uptick with a record rise in GDP and no coups (unlike the rest of the surrounding nations). ![]() Abouet witnessed the rise of African comics during the early 2000s as they started to cover “current affairs or fragments of everyday experience, or took the form of dramatic and fantastic creations.” (African Wave) She believed comics would be the perfect medium for retelling childhood memories. One reason why Abouet created comics was in response to the pushback she received from the publishing world when she attempted to write novels. The accounts depicted African culture through the light of her childhood experiences. The adventures throughout the story were based on her own experiences and stories she heard. ![]() In Aya, Abouet recreated memories and the characters were her friends. To her, Abidjan was a beautiful land full of culture and stories passed down, generationally. For Abouet the depiction of her home in writing/media betrayed her childhood memory. It chronicled her life from birth to age twelve. Even though she stated her works specifically on Aya wasn’t autobiographical, the story was based on her upbringing in Western Africa. Dede Crane's acute observation of teen bravado, vulnerability, humor, and self-righteousness, coupled with a serious theme handled with sensitivity and directness, makes Poster Boy an unforgettable read. The plot slows when Gray decides to pull a Thoreau and live on a farm, refusing to eat anything containing toxins. When his research indicates silkscreen chemicals may have caused the cancer, his mother's subsequent breakdown and his father's anger drive him to quit school and seek haven at an organic farm run by an older couple. Crane effectively shows a family unraveling, and Gray’s authentic teen narration springs from the pages. Eventually Gray's obsessive campaign alienates his friends. While his mother joins his crusade, Gray's father, to his son's disgust, only wants to celebrate what's left of his daughter's life. When he learns the cancer may have environmental origins, Gray sets out to investigate and make Maggie better. Then Gray's 12-year-old science-nerd sister, Maggie, contracts a rare form of cancer. Despite the popular acclaim of the book and its impact across academic disciplines, their claims met resistance as they challenged objectivist views of meaning and language. In Metaphors We Live By they argued that abstract thought is mostly metaphorical (having a literal core extended by mutually inconsistent metaphors and therefore incomplete without them), that metaphors are fundamentally conceptual (while metaphorical language is secondary), and that metaphorical thought is ubiquitous, unavoidable, largely unconscious, and grounded in everyday life. Four decades ago, linguists and philosophers George Lakoff and Mark Johnson published an influential book on the nature of metaphors. ![]() 5/19/2023 0 Comments To kill the kingdom![]() ![]() So anything that is romantic would be more so for young adults.
